Hi guys! Happy remote school day!

Here's the assignment to do, so you can get counted as "present" today.

Today you are going to find 3 works (books, illustrations, movies, tv shows, animations, short films) that are examples of some of the qualities you are trying to show in your children's book.

The name for this is a "precedent".

These precedents can either:

a. Address ideas that are related to your project. (So Sully and Jon would look for examples about kids sending it, while Saydee, Marley, Kole, and Mikayla would look for books about different kinds of loss.

b. Show story-telling styles you might want to use. (Sully and Jon might find a pop-up book because it's active, while Tiana and Maryam might find movies that use poetry to tell a sad story...)

c. Or use an illustration method that you might want to try. (Marley and Saydee might want examples of illustrations that are really realistic, while Bella and Alex might want to see methods that are more like paintings...)

What you need to do:

Use the power of the internet to find 3 projects that relate to your 'children's book.'

AT LEAST ONE HAS TO BE A BOOK! You can't do three episodes of Sponge Bob, Kole!

Look in the "resources" folder on here. Megan posted lots of great examples...

Step 1: Ideas

Find a children's book, tv show, movie, or short film or animation that deals with the ideas your book is going to talk about.

(You can use amazon to look up kids' books and then use the "look inside" feature to read the story.)

a. Read or watch it.

b. Screen shot the cover.

c. Write a blog post under "projects" which has your screen shot image, the name of the author or filmmaker, and answers these questions:

How does this precedent connect to your children's book?

What ideas does it give you?

Step 2: Storytelling Styles

Find a children's book, tv show, movie, or short film or animation that shows a storytelling style you might want to use in your book.

What ideas does this method of storytelling it give you?

Step 3: Illustrations

Find a children's book, tv show, movie, or short film or animation that has a illustration style or technique you might want to use.

What ideas does it give you for how you might want to illustrate your book?

 ------------

Sound good? Make sense? You can see an example of a post here:

This precedent connects to my children's book because I like the idea of using mostly illustration to tell the story, and in this book the author did a good job of just using really interesting illustrations and very few words. I like that.

This gives me the ideas that we could illustrate our book using a similar style to hers: We could make the drawings go all the way across the page and use really bold colors. This way the drawing pulls you in. The words are way off to the side, so a kid would just look at the picture and have a lot to look at while a grown-up reads to her.

In your Project Folder under your 'Portfolio' tab, create a post with ALL the pages of your book. You can do this by uploading a picture for each page. This is different than the Final Presentation. This should be just your book.

It is OK! if you're book isn't completely finished! This is a place for us to be able to see all your work up til now! If you'd like to jump back into this project at any time- all your work will be here for you!
